Consulting Practicum

The Consulting Practicum provides students the opportunity to collaborate with businesses or non-profit organizations that are seeking creative solutions to challenges they face. Through faculty guidance, students will undertake an experiential learning project in which they will investigate projects as consultants – working through all project phases from investigation and analysis, through presentation of recommendations designed to meet real-world needs.

While enrolled in SOSC 444, students are broken into consulting teams, allowing them to provide consulting services for a real business throughout the course of a semester. Students will have the opportunity to preference which businesses/projects they are interested in working with; allowing students to explore their interests and utilize their unique skillsets.

This experience is offered each fall semester.

Eligibility

  • Must have a declared major within the School of Social Sciences, and have completed 12 credit hours in the declared major. If a student has not yet declared a major in Social Sciences, they may apply before doing so, however, final approval is not possible until the relevant major is officially declared.
  • Preference will be given to students in their third/fourth year of study. However, all Social Sciences students are welcomed to apply.

Application

  • Applications each year will open in mid-February.
    • Fall 2025 Application (February 19 – March 8)

Once Selected

Students must complete all post-admission application items that will be provided after approval for the program. Failure to respond to emails in a timely manner may result in dismissal from the program

  • Students will enroll in SOSC 444- Consulting Practicum.
  • During the first weeks of class, students will have an opportunity to review the projects and preference those that peak their interest. Most projects will be assigned 3-5 students.
  • Students will meet with project hosts and consulting mentor throughout the semester to collect information and provide feedback on their progress.
  • Project findings and feedback will be presented during the final week of class.
