Testimony
“My two biggest takeaways from the program were the complexity of the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of storytelling in the 1960s and today. One of my favorite things about the class was how we discussed and debated different elements that made the movement what it was, which made me think from a lot of different perspectives. We disproved a lot of my previous assumptions and I now understand the movement and protest as a whole on another level. Then, learning the different perspectives of different civil rights leaders made me realize how important storytelling is in the legacy of this movement, and the way certain people were portrayed in history is not always honest, and that we should question everything. Holding these takeaways true means that as I learn and navigate my classes at Rice, I will never forget to challenge my own assumptions and always be ready to learn more.”
